Artbank has partnered with the Australian Tapestry Workshop to present ‘Weaving Together’, an exhibition celebrating the significant number of tapestries in the Artbank Collection.
Several large-scale tapestries designed by Australian artists were commissioned by Artbank in the 1980’s in a period of burgeoning support for Australian voices and the opportunity to have these designs woven in Australia. The tapestries in Artbank’s collection include those designed by legendary textile designer Rae Ganim, and leading contemporary artists including Stephen Griffin, Dale Hickey, Max Miller, John R Neeson, Michael Shannon and ATW weaver Merrill Dumbrell.
Presented in partnership with Artbank for Craft Contemporary 2023 across the two venues, ‘Weaving Together’ reunites these tapestries to present a snapshot of contemporary textile practice in Australia in the 1980’s and celebrates the ongoing relationship between the Artbank and the ATW.
On display at ATW will be the commission by Micheal Shannon from the Artbank collection, a Lesley Dumbrell tapestry from the ATW collection, and a Dale Hickey tapestry from the Tapestry Foundation of Australia collection. The tapestries will be contextualised by works on paper, experimental tapestry samples and work in progress photos from the ATW studio archives.
