During the tour you will have an opportunity to observe the weavers at work from our mezzanine, and to look down into the colour laboratory where the yarns are dyed for production. The ATW has two galleries which feature curated exhibitions of tapestries, textiles and contemporary art on a rotating basis. We have also have a shop on site where we sell our exclusive yarns, with a colour range of 368 colours, as well as ATW cards, jigsaw puzzles and books.
Bookings are essential and we advise reaching out at least 2 weeks prior to the requested date.
Book via phone +613 9699 7885 or email contact@austapestry.com.au
Tours run for approximately one hour.
Please note - the mezzanine viewing platform is at the top of several stairs and is not wheelchair-accessible. If you require a wheelchair or walker, our friendly staff can arrange for you to watch the weavers from the workshop floor. Visitors are welcome to come to the ATW at any time during public opening hours. Entry is by gold coin donation. Find out more about planning your visit here
Getting here:
Public Transport: Take the No 1 tram (South Melbourne Beach) in Swanston Street and alight at stop 24 or take the No 12 tram (St Kilda Beach) in Collins Street and alight at stop 129
Parking:
Most of the parking around the ATW is one or two hour metered parking. Parking at the South Melbourne Market on market days is free for the first two hours. The South Melbourne Market is open on Wednesday and Friday.
For those unable to join us for an onsite tour, a virtual tour is available online.
Captured in 2020, enjoy a remote visit to the ATW, just as the weavers had completed weaving 'Hear the Plant Song', and 'The Royal Harvest' was well and truly established on the loom. The tour also lets you explore our annual artist in residence group show 'AIR19'.
Ticketing for our weekly guided tours contributes greatly to the ATW's annual income. To assist the ATW during this challenging time, we ask that viewers with the capacity to do so make a donation of $10 – the cost of our usual tour ticket.
Thank you to Ignition Immersive and the City of Port Phillip for their generous support of this project.
