In this three hour workshop Donna will introduce participants to traditional basket weaving using an open style coil weaving. Using plant fibre and two hands, participants will be guided to create a small basket with a focus on process rather than the outcome, allowing for further making and refinement of the technique beyond the workshop. All materials included; no skills required.
Donna Blackall is a Yorta Yorta artist who has been practicing and teaching the art of traditional coil basket weaving throughout Victoria for the past 12 years. She first learnt to weave in this style as a child and reconnected with the art in a workshop with master weaver Bronwyn Razem (Gunditijmara). Donna’s practice pushes this traditional technique into contemporary art forms that carry deep meaning and stories.
