Yorta Yorta artist Donna Blackall has been practicing and teaching the art of traditional coil basket weaving throughout Victoria for the past 12 years. She first learnt to weave in this style as a child and reconnected with the art in a workshop with master weaver Bronwyn Razem (Gunditijmara). Donna’s practice pushes this traditional technique into contemporary art forms that carry deep meaning and stories. Using an open style of coil weaving Donna teaches workshops to indigenous and non-indigenous people with a strong focus on process rather than the outcome. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Koorie Heritage Trust.
During her residency at the ATW, Donna is eager to further focus on her art of basket weaving to tell stories about the animals, land and waterways in Victoria. In using art to tell stories she hopes we can find better ways of understanding indigenous people, respect all living things and care for country.
Join Donna for 'Coil Weaving' at the ATW on Saturday 28 January, a three hour workshop to learn traditional basket weaving using an open style coil weaving.
