Jacky Cheng is an artist of Chinese diaspora who lives in the Kimberley in Western Australia. She creates artwork using textiles and paper that explore identity through cultural activities and memories of home, country and relationships. Jacky’s practice is influenced notions of ‘belonging’ through her diasporic identity as a Chinese descendant. To ‘make’ is to remember; weaving narratives of her experiences and cultural histories expressed through paper and fibre to reflect and document significant experiences.

Jacky was the winner of The John Stringer Prize in 2022, and was a Finalist in the 2022 National Works on Paper award and has recently exhibited her work at the Broome Fringe Festival and the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival. In 2019, she attended a residency at Awagami Factory in Japan to learn how to harvest, prepare and produce kozo papers. She is interested in working towards making several paper cloths (Shifu) on the Rigid Heddle Loom and using her own handmade paper threads for the next part of an ongoing project; ‘Honour and Love - Chapter III.’
