Helen Smith and Lauren Cruickshank are both practising Butoh dancers.

Their movement based performance involves removing artifice, and stripping away the social veneer to get back to what is known as the “original body”. This body may be primordial, sublime, grotesque or exquisitely beautiful, but whatever it is, it will be truthful. Then, using image-based stimulus, real experience and sometimes music… sometimes silence, the dance begins to unfold.

It is almost as if the dancer is being moved by something other than her own will; the space too, comes alive and interacts with the dancer in a two-way communication: the dancer changes the space and is moved by it.
