For the second TDPA, the ATW received an astounding 117 entries from 76 entrants from around the globe, who entered tapestry design concepts for the hypothetical site at the National Gallery of Australia. The 13 finalists were: Andrew Foster and Jessica Kreps, Bec O’Brien, Beth George, Emerald Wise and Kate Fitzgerald, Tiffany Liew, Cooper Freeman (Stephanie Cooper and Tynan Freeman), Eugene Cheah Architecture (Eugene Cheah and Joanne Saw), Jemmott, JoyJoy, Justin Hill – 22 Temenggong Road, Misho + Associates, NH Architecture ( 2 entries) and Sarah Lake Architects.

The first prize recipient, Justin Hill – an Australian-trained architect living in Singapore, captivated the judges with the beauty of his entry and they felt that the intricateness and delicacy of his design concept lent itself to a technically challenging and rewarding tapestry that is well suited to the expertise of the ATW weavers. Second prize was awarded to Tiffany Liew, third prize to Sarah Lake Architects, and People's Choice Award went to Andrew Foster and Jessica Kreps. The winning design and prize recipients were selected on the basis of artistic merit; ability to engage to a high degree with the unique qualities of tapestry; ability to design a major artwork that responds to a contemporary architectural space; and capacity to celebrate tapestry in architecture, through understanding of materials form, design and collaborative interpretation.

The hypothetical site for the 2016 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects is the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). The specific site the tapestry is to be designed for is on Level 1 of Col Madigan’s original building, on a bush hammered concrete wall that is one of the exterior walls of the James Fairfax Theatre. Originally an external wall, it is now a feature of Andrew Anderson's new entry building. The wall can be seen above when entering the NGA, and becomes more prominent as you climb the escalators to Level 1 and the NGA's main galleries. The width of the wall from column to the end of the wall is 7700mm. The height of the wall from the floor of the balcony to the top of the bush hammered concrete wall is 7500mm. Adjacent to the wall is a viewing balcony (4080mm wide) used to access the Indigenous Art Galleries.
