In 2025 we are introducing brand new galleries dedicated to showcasing the work of our Artists in Residence. Our first exhibitions of the year features Sangeeta Sandrasegar (VIC) and Rosie O’Brien (VIC).
EXHIBITION DATES Thursday 13 February – Saturday 24 May 2025
Sangeeta Sandrasegar has consistently engaged with shadow as a formal and symbolic motif in her exploration of postcolonial and hybridity theory. Best known for her delicate paper cut-outs, Sandrasegar’s practice includes watercolour, drawing, sculpture, video, embroidery and printmaking. Drawing from her upbringing in Australia and Malaysia, and her Indian and Malaysian ancestry, Sandrasegar explores the relationship between migrant communities and homelands, giving voice to the identities of people caught on the margins of society.
In 2004 Sangeeta Sandrasegar completed a Doctorate of Philosophy at the Victorian College of the Arts and the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne. She has exhibited throughout Australia and her work has been featured in public exhibitions including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Melbourne; and the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; in addition to major international exhibitions and biennials in New Zealand, Korea, India and the USA. Sangeeta Sandrasegar is represented by Niagra Galleries.
Rosie O’Brien is an emerging artist working on paper, digital animation and textiles. She draws inspiration from the rich colour and form found in botany, approaching the work with a delicate intimacy. The vibrant use of pattern and placement of soft vessel-like flowers demonstrates her sensitive and observant style. In her soft sculpture work the fabric piles up to form peaks of carefully chosen colours, and in works on paper the composition is sparse, the soft palette reminiscent of spring.
O’Brien (b 1974) has worked in the Arts Project Australia studio since 2015 and has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne, including ‘and on the eyes, black sleep of night’, Seventh Gallery; and ‘The Pursuit of Colour’ and ‘Home & the fabric of the familiar’, Arts Project Australia, Melbourne.
Rosie is the 2025 Arts Project Australia Artist in Residence.
