Danica Chappell is a Naarm (Melbourne)-based visual artist. Through a darkroom-based, cameraless practice, she explores abstraction alongside the material and historical conditions of photography, engaging with the medium’s inherent malleability. Working with photograms, she creates light-modulated forms that emphasise gesture, rhythm, and the handmade image.

Chappell has exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and was a recipient of an Australia Council Arts Projects Grant. She will commence a PhD at Sydney College of the Arts in 2026.

ATW + Linden New Art Mid-Career Artist in Residence

The Australian Tapestry Workshop and Linden New Art have partnered to offer a unique residency and exhibition opportunity for Australian mid-career artists. Danica Chappell is the inaugural recipient of this residency.

Designed to foster experimentation and support the development of artistic practice, the residency takes place at the Australian Tapestry Workshop and provides access to studio space, expert staff, including master weavers and colour technicians, and a collaborative working environment.

As part of the program, the selected artist will also work closely with Linden New Art to develop a new body of work, culminating in an exhibition at Linden Projects Space. This opportunity is open to Australian mid-career artists working in any medium, whose practice would benefit from the resources and expertise offered by the Australian Tapestry Workshop.
