The Australian Tapestry Workshop was delighted to host a special lecture with Singapore-based architect Justin Hill as part of the 2018 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects on Thursday 23 August.
Justin Hill is the winner of the second Tapestry Design Prize for Architects with his design22 Temenggong Road, Twilight. His design impressed the judging panel with the beautiful and intricate nature of the design concept, which is based on the architect’s personal experience of living in Singapore and the ‘luminous blue of the short tropical twilight’.
Based in Singapore since 1981, Justin Hill is a leading international architect and a Director of the Kerry Hill Architects practices. He is also renowned stage designer who has worked on more than 30 major productions and designed several theatre venues across Australia and Asia.
22 Temenggong Road, Twilight is the first full-sized tapestry project undertaken by ATW weaver interns Karlie Hawking, Leith Maguire and Sophie Morris.
Justin Hill spoke in conversation with ATW weaver intern Karlie Hawking about the experience of working on this major project, and the process involved in translating this design into tapestry form. Their insights as both designer and weaver provided an illuminating insight into the nature of collaboration at ATW.
