Speaker: Jilly Edwards (UK)
Tuesday 18 May 6pm AEST*
Celebrating 10 years since the Kate Derum Award was established the tapestry weavers selected for this speaker series will have been winners or finalists of either the Kate Derum Award or Irene Davies Emerging Artist Award for Small Tapestries. This series of lectures celebrates the diversity and scope of contemporary tapestry practice worldwide in anticipation of the awards.
British tapestry artist Jilly Edwards was the recipient of the High Commended Award in the 2013 Kate Derum Award and was also a finalist in 2015. She has studied tapestry at the Edinburgh College of Art and textiles at the West of England College of Art. Recent exhibitions include ‘Hellreef 3 Small Tapestry Biennale’ London, ‘Weaving New Worlds’ at the William Morris Gallery, London and ‘Collect Open18’ at Saatchi Gallery, London. Jilly Edwards’ tapestry practice is rooted in the practice of sketching and journaling her daily experiences. She records colours, textures, shapes and light, responses to the landscapes she is traversing and the memories that are evoked by them. Her whimsical responses to the daily human experience are then translated into tapestry in the studio, these abstract weavings celebrate colour, tone and mark making.
