Emma Stenhouse is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman and contemporary artist. Emma encapsulates her knowledge in her “storyworks”, formed by her deep relationship to land and guided by strong female role models in her community.

Growing up in Broken Hill, outback NSW, Emma intrinsically draws on her connection to Country, the practices used to care for Country and the knowledge her family holds to ensure those practices are maintained for future generations.

As a multifaceted creative, Emma explores diverse art practices influenced by her journey. Each art piece is braided with learning, an enriching exchange between artist and viewer, a continuation of culture and a platform for cross-cultural exchange.

Emma’s residency with ATW will allow for the exploration of traditional rites of passage, weaving with hair and other native plant fibres. This will be the next progression from Emma’s participation in the 2024 Blak Design Program with KHT and RMIT. She will delve into dyeing techniques which will prove an enriching experience.
