In this lecture artists Lyndell Brown and Charles Green spoke about their design for the Morning Star tapestry.
Lyndell and Charles have been official war artists in Iraq and Afghanistan and have had over 30 exhibitions in Australia and internationally.
Morning Star was designed for the Sir John Monash Centre in Villers-Bretonneux, France, opened on 24 April 2018. This tapestry evokes the experience of Australian soldiers arriving at war and their memories of their departure from home, freedom and Australia's clear light. Within this tapestry design, the artists explored the complex notions of visual and cultural archival structures and the entwined connections between memory, place and displacement.
Morning Star was woven by Pamela Joyce, Leonie Bessant, Chris Cochius, Jennifer Sharpe and Cheryl Thornton, taking the weavers over 4000 hours to make.
