The translation of an artwork into tapestry is a complex and collaborative process.
The Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW), Pop Architecture and the Hotham Street Ladies joined together for an interactive workshop and installation that provided a glimpse into how artworks are interpreted into the tapestry medium.
Pop Architecture and Hotham Street Ladies are the first prize winners of the 2018 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects with their design Chaos and Fertility. Their interactive workshop invited audience members to engage with life-sized textile vignettes that visually transform their design into its intended scale. This allowed audiences to imagine how their design could be realised as a tapestry, and provided a playful opportunity for audiences to immerse themselves in this imagined scene. Participants also had the opportunity to learn the basics of weaving on an ATW community loom., lead by an ATW weaver.
