The ATW was delighted to announce American artist Pae White as the 2017 Hancock Fellow.
The Hancock Fellow, established by the Tapestry Foundation in 1998 in honour of former Chairman Arnold Hancock OBE, allows opportunities to bring internationally recognised artists in tapestry, textiles and design to visit the ATW and share their expertise.
Pae White (b. 1964, lives and works in Los Angeles) is an internationally recognised artist best known for her large-scale machine-loomed tapestries and immersive site-specific installations in a variety of media. Her practice merges art, design, craft and architecture to create works that transcend the traditional boundaries between these fields. At the heart of Pae’s practice is an interest in capturing fleeting beauty, and challenging the viewer’s understanding of the everyday.
For her free public lecture at ATW, Pae provided an insight into her esteemed career, and focused on some recent projects and exhibitions. This included her participation in the inaugural NGV Triennial. Pae’s visit to Melbourne was possible by the ATW and the NGV.
