You are invited to meet Kaimurai, this year's supported International Artist in Residence at Australian Tapestry Workshop. Kaimurai is one of seven annual residents selected for the relevance of their practice to the world class work of ATW.

Kaimurai is a textile artist based in Bangalore who paints with Indigo on khadi cloth, his work is a dialogue between organic forms and the flow of energy experienced through the Western Ghats, Ancient South Indian art, rituals, architecture and Carnatic music.

Kaimurai is the identity through which Abishek Ganesh J expresses his art and research practice. Kaimuari translates from Tamil to mean “method of hand”.

Kaimurai is an Artist in Residence at the Australian Tapestry Workshop in 2024, is the recipient of the Irene Davies International Residency Scholarship supported by Alayne and Alan Davies and the Hancock Fellowship, supported by the Tapestry Foundation of Australia. The Hancock Fellowship was established to bring international artists in tapestry, textile and design to visit the ATW and share their expertise through an exhibition and lecture whilst learning about contemporary art and creative industries in Australia.

Kaimurai is a resident at ATW for three weeks in June 2024. He will be making new work and exchanging insights and expertise with ATW weavers and dyers and the surrounding creative community.

Padmini Sebastian is Director, Engagement and Partnerships, collaborating with cross-sector and multi-disciplinary partners to collectively address place-based challenges and opportunities that benefit our communities. She is part of a global network advancing engagement and partnership practice. She was involved in establishing and leading the Immigration Museum in Melbourne. She contributes to not-for profit Boards and organisations and is involved in the Melbourne Awards, Arts House and Australian Print Workshop. Padmini is a 2000 Churchill Fellow and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to multiculturalism and the community.
