The 'Propositions: 2023 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects' exhibition will tour to the Canberra Craft + Design Festival this October.
Festival Opening Hours 1 – 10 November Daily 10am – 6pm. Post Festival Opening Hours 13 November – 30 November Wednesday to Saturday 12pm – 4pm.
This exhibition will be formally opened on 31 October 2024 at the Festival Hub Space, 180 London Circuit, Canberra, ACT.
This exhibition presents the regenerative possibilities of tapestry to enhance architectural spaces, showcasing tapestries designed by architects for Kerstin Thompson Architect’s Bundanon Art Museum and woven by weavers at the Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW.) Since 2015 the Tapestry Design Prize for Architects (TDPA) has fostered exciting new creative dialogues between architects and tapestry weavers. Sections of designs by 10 finalists were woven as large format studies by weavers from the Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW). Weavers responded individually to a section of each design that inspired or intrigued them.
These Propositions provide a glimpse into the potential for these designs to be realised as large-scale tapestries. These designs and the resulting woven studies are a snapshot into contemporary thinking on the ability. They celebrate the artistry and technical skills of ATW weavers and the creative and innovative possibilities available to architects, artists and designers.
