Lara Tilbrook is a visual artist living on lands of Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Narungga, her ancestral homelands. Working across textiles, sculpture, text and installation, her artistic practice is rooted in ecological concern and steeped in a reverent relationship to Karta/Kangaroo Island.
Through manual processes of gathering materials and painstaking delicate assembly, Lara’s work embodies an ethos of Caring for Country. Practising close, devotional observation embedded in knowledge of the landscape, the artist often repurposes found and foraged natural materials.
Finding adaptable ways to live together meaningfully and harmoniously is an animating force in the artist’s work. By foregrounding relational and time-based practices such as sharing space and slow-making, Lara advocates for living sustainably. Major exhibitions include Radical Textiles at The Art Gallery of South Australia (2024-2025); Harbingers: Care or Catastrophe (2025), a travelling exhibition, commissioned by Country Arts SA (2021) and featured in Adelaide Festival (2023).
During her residency Lara will focus on receiving technical support and mentorship. She will honour materials from her home, regenerating circular economies of care, laboured with love to interconnect the growth of biodiversity. An instillation of new works and a public program will be presented at ATW in October to coincide with Radiant Pavilion, contemporary jewellery and object biennial.
