Dr Kate Beynon is a Hong Kong born, Naarm-based multidisciplinary artist and educator, working across painting, textile soft-sculpture, fashion, public art, immersive interactive spaces, animation and projection art, including collaboration with creative family collective TudoFAM. Informed by her Cantonese-Malaysian-Celtic/Welsh cultural background alongside her family’s diverse ancestries, Kate’s practice explores hybrid identities, colour and portraits through guardian spirit figures and talismanic imagery.
Kate was awarded the 2024 City of Yarra Fellowship, 2021 Collingwood Yards/Bank of Melbourne Residency and is a nine-time Archibald Prize finalist and Winner of the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize, 2016. Exhibited widely nationally and internationally, Kate’s work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Victoria; Art Gallery of New South Wales; MMK/Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt; with major projects commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Gadigal/Sydney; Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Meanjin/Brisbane and National Portrait Gallery, Kamberri/Canberra.
During the ATW Residency, Kate will learn about natural colour processes through the dye lab for painting textiles in connection with colour theory and symbolism to develop a series of small soft-sculptures. Exploring the merging of costume, installation and wearable art, Kate will also create imagery for potential animated and projection work.
Kate Beynon is represented by Sutton Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne.
