Studio Brieditis & Evans is a Sweden-based textile studio run by Katarina Brieditis and Katarina Evans. Having worked together since 2002, Studio Brieditis & Evans explores sustainability and textile recycling as a main objective through textile art and craft. Their projects are created with donated materials that are considered worthless: textile industrial waste, excess and old clothes, to draw attention to current modes of consumption and the viability of industrial production. The work is carried out in a free and experimental manner with an aim to add artistic value to the material with craft skills.
Their largest project to was ‘Re Rag Rug’ (2012-2017), an experimental design project challenging themselves to make 12 rugs in 12 different techniques in 12 months, using only donated materials and without using a loom. They have been commissioned by Lane Crawford HK, Ace Hotel in Pittsburgh, The Church of Sweden and The Almgren Silk Weaving Museum (Stockholm). In 2017 they had a residency with Atelier MUJI in Tokyo, creating a one-off art piece, using MUJI factory off-cuts.
Studio Brieditis & Evans are the recipients of the 2023 Irene Davies International Residency Scholarship. As part of this scholarship they will present a solo exhibition in the ATW galleries of their ‘Re Rag Rug’ works, as well as a rag rug workshop. During their residency they will experiment with locally sourced textile waste materials.
