Senior Weaver
Leonie Bessant first worked at the ATW (then the Victorian Tapestry Workshop) in 1980 to 1988 and then intermittently for the last 20 years.
She has returned to the ATW team and is working on the large scale ‘Parramatta’ tapestry. Leonie has worked on a number of significant tapestries including the monumental 'Great Hall Tapestry' which hangs in Parliament House, Canberra and was the designing artist for the impressive series of tapestry commissioned for the Melbourne International arrivals lounge.
Returning to the ATW has allowed Leonie to reconnect with old friends she first worked with in the 1980's. She has also enjoyed working at the ATW as she has been able to work collaboratively with other weavers in the ATW studio rather than working from home. Leonie's favourite project she has woven on is the 'Great Hall Tapestry'.
